Fair Lawn Police Department
"The Briefing Room"

July 17, 2012..... F.L.P.D. Officer promoted

Detective Tony Ferreira, was promoted to Sergeant at the July 17, 2012, council meeting.

Ferreira, who was born and raised in Fair Lawn, began his career with the Fair Lawn Police Department in 1989, following a one-year stint as a patrolman in Franklin Lakes. He became a detective in 2005.

Borough Manager Tom Metzler, who worked with Ferreira back when he was a dispatcher, provided a highlight reel rundown of the brand-new sergeant's history with the department:

  • He was one of the officers involved in the local search for the person responsible for the shooting death of Officer Mary Ann Collura
  • He was the first officer on the scene of a homicide in town where he arrested the husband, who had a knife in his hand, and was later convicted of the murder of his wife.
  • He arrested a burglar in the act of coming out of a business in the industrial park.
  • While assigned to the detective bureau, he was responsible for making Fair Lawn the first community in Bergen County to use bar codes for property and evidence tracking. This system is now utilized across the state, including by the state police.
  • He worked with several of Fair Lawn's civilian dispatchers to include geocodes in the town's mapping system, for the better safety of the town's police officers.

"But I think most significant and the biggest tribute that any of us could pay to Sgt. Ferreira is the fact that there's so many of his brothers that are here tonight," Metzler concluded. "Both current officers, I see a lot of retired officers, I see officers that were here and that moved to other departments, I see civilians that worked here and worked for other departments and, Sergeant, I think that's a tribute to you and to the Fair Lawn Police Department. Tony, it was my honor. Congratulations."

August 18, 2010.....FAIR LAWN POLICE EXPLORERS RETURN FROM STATEWIDE ACADEMY AT MONMOUTH UNIV.

Last week, members of the Fair Lawn Police Explorer Post 902 returned from a 7 day residential academy held at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, NJ. The state-wide academy was sponsored by the Police Athletic League of NJ. Law Enforcement Officers from throughout the northeast provided instruction in a variety of topics. Explorers are given unique insight into the field of law enforcement and are treated identically to that of basic police recruits while at the academy. These young adults (Ages 14-21) endure long arduous days that start at 5 AM with real police academy drill instructors running physical training. They run two to three miles, complete calisthenics and practice marching and paying their respects to the flag at a daily "raising of the colors." Explorers then attend classroom and practical lessons and compete to win awards!

The academy is a four tier program. After successfully completing each tier, the explorers return the following year to benefit from even more advanced training. Third tier explorers receive an entire week's worth of practical scenerios that they must perform as if they were the real police officer responding to an actual  call for service. Actors portray victims and suspects and put on quite a realistic performance. Explorers are faced with making split second decisions just like police officers must make and they are graded on the outcome.

This year, Fair Lawn's explorers took home two awards on behalf of the program.  Explorer Jorge Vela won 1st Place in Physical Training and Explorer Leanne Biss won 3rd Place in Physical Training.  Fair Lawn Police Officer Michael O'Brien, the Advisor for the Explorer Post and Tier 3 State Academy Coordinator accompanied the explorers for the week. This year marks the seventh year Fair Lawn's Explorers have attended the academy.

The Fair Lawn explorers that successfully completed Tier 1 were Leanne Biss, Justin LeFebvre, Anthony Gallo, Jonathan Ryan, Alex Tredy, and Jorge Vela.

Officer O'Brien noted that the academy tuition and related fees were paid for by funds raised through local DARE recycling bins and with the gracious assistance of the Fair Lawn Drug Alliance.

O'Brien also noted explorers that have completed this four tier program make for more attractive law enforcement candidates because of the unique nature of this academy. O'Brien said many officers, including O'Brien started off as law enforcement explorers. O'Brien said he began his law enforcement career as a Demarest Police Explorer in 1983 and has been involved in many ways since then guiding young adults to their career goals. O'Brien marked his twenty sixth year involved in law enforcement exploring and proudly reported he received national recognition in 2005 winning the William H. Spurgeon, III Award. That award is given once a year and is the highest recognition for individuals contributing significant leadership to the exploring program.

Exploring is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, Learning for Life Division. Young men and women ages 14 to 21 who wish to find out more information about law enforcement exploring in Fair Lawn can contact Police Officer Michael O'Brien at 201-794-5362, extension 242 or email him at mobrien@fairlawnpd.com.

July 15, 2006.....FLPD/FL Rotary Clubs Participate in "Hooray for Helmets"

Fair Lawn P.D. Fair Lawn Rotary announces “Horray for Helmets” campaign.  Fair Lawn Police Department along with the Fair Lawn Rotary have teamed up with support from local ice cream vendors in town to help promote the idea of bike safety and wearing helmets.  The plan is that local police officers will now be looking to reward children who are wearing their helmets.  When a police officer observes a child wearing his or her helmet, the officer will be able to reward the child with a free ice cream cone from a local merchant in town.  A Rotary sticker will also be given to attach to the child’s helmet.  A child who is observed a second time will be eligible for a second reward.

Current statistics show that most children (60%) do not always wear their helmets when biking.  The idea is reward children who are in compliance of the mandatory law.  Recently in New Jersey, the helmet laws have gone beyond bicycles and now include roller skates/blades, skateboards and scooters.  Fair Lawn, along with the state, are looking to increase compliance of the mandatory law.

5 Fair Lawn Police Chief Erik Rose announced the arrest of Kenneth Lieb. Lieb is 32 years old and resides at 13-22 Fairclough Place in Fair Lawn.

At 2:49 a.m., Lieb broke into the Garden Pharmacy, located at 13-38 River Road, by using a hammer to break a rear bathroom window, then to have accessed the pharmacy by entering through the window. Once inside he placed several different medicines into a bag including Oxycontin and Vicodin.

In the meantime, the Fair Lawn Police Department received a burglar alarm from the pharmacy and dispatched Officer Edward Egan and Officer Kevin Wood to investigate the alarm. Egan arrived at the scene and went to the front of the pharmacy. Wood went to the rear of the pharmacy. Wood noticed that the rear bathroom window had been broken and Egan noticed that there was a person inside the store. Additional backup units were requested and dispatched.

While the officers were waiting for the additional backup units to arrive, Lieb ran out the back door of the pharmacy. Wood ordered him to stop and a struggle ensued in which Lieb hit Wood in the face with his elbow. Lieb broke free and fled on foot with Wood in pursuit also on foot.

P.O. Luis Vasquez and Sgt. Brian Metzler riding together in a two-officer patrol car pulled the car in front of the fleeing Lieb at Hopper Avenue and George Street. Vasquez attempted to subdue Lieb. During the ensuing struggle, Lieb punched Officer Vasquez several times. Sgt. Metzler joined the struggle and assisted in subduing and handcuffing Lieb. During a search of Lieb's person, officers uncovered a utility knife that had been in his pocket.

Lieb was charged with one count of robbery for using force against another while in the course of committing a theft or in the course of fleeing from a theft, two counts of aggravated assault against a police officer, one count for the assault upon Officer Wood and another count for his assault against Officer Vasquez, one count of resisting arrest, one count of possession of a weapon, a utility knife, under circumstances not manifestly appropriate for it's lawful use and one count of possession of burglar's tools namely a hammer and a bent screwdriver used to gain access to the pharmacy.

Officer Edward Egan had cut his hand on broken glass at the pharmacy. Officer Luis Vasquez suffered swelling to his index finger as a result of using the hand to block a punch thrown by Leib as well as a strained knee. May 21, 2002.....On May 21st at approximately 2:15 p.m., an elderly resident of Midland Ave. was visited by a white male approximately 35-40 years of age, 5’5’’ tall, medium build with dark hair and eyes. The male was wearing dark clothing and parked a white pick up truck in the resident’s driveway. The male advised the resident that there had been a water main break on Broadway and that he needed to see her water meter. The male told the resident to watch the meter while he went upstairs to run the water. When the resident became suspicious and went upstairs to confront him, the male stated that that she had overpaid her water bill and then asked to see her strongbox. When the resident refused, he left the residence.

It is important to realize that all employees of the Fair Lawn Water Department carry proper identification. Residents who are suspicious should ask to see the employee’s identification and should refuse entry into their homes to anyone claiming to be a water department employee and notify the police immediately at (201)796-1400. Also, the public should be aware that the Water Department does not utilize a white pick up truck.  The Water Department utilizes only Blue pickup trucks that have Fair Lawn Water Department painted on the doors.  The water department also usually does not handle financial transactions at a resident’s home. The only exception is when the customer has contacted the water department to request that a serviceperson come out to test a meter because the resident believes that the meter is not functioning properly. Detective Sergeant Michael Messina is investigating the Midland Ave. incident. Members of the public with any information about this case may contact him at (201)794-5410.
