Fair Lawn Police Department's

Our 7th Citizen's Police Academy class graduated on February 5, 2008.  The class is designed for adults, age 18 years and older.   It met weekly, Tuesday nights, for 15 weeks.  Each week a different police related topic was discussed.  Topics discussed included criminal investigation, traffic law, motor vehicle stops, narcotics, domestic violence, gangs, fire safety, first aid and the criminal justice system. In addition field trips were be taken to the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute, the Bergen County Jail, the Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office. This year a new segment was added on self-defense, taught by retired Fair Lawn Police Officer Cliff Downey.

      Our first Citizen Police Academy graduated in January 2002 and they have been held each year since.  The Citizen's Police Academy has been very well received by its participants. Many have gone on to volunteer for the Fair Lawn Police Reserves, the Domestic Violence Crisis Team, or the Citizen Emergency Response Team through the Office Of Emergency Management.
