2006 Junior Police Academy has concluded.....watch for the 2007 announcement next spring

The Fair Lawn Police Department's 4th annual Junior Citizen’s Police Academy has concluded.   The Academy is made possible through a grant from the Fair Lawn Municipal Alliance for Substance Abuse Education which receives it’s funding through the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. The purpose of the Junior Citizen’s Police Academy is to better acquaint young people with the workings of their local police department as well as other emergency services and to break down barriers between the police and young people.

From July 17 to July 21, 2006, the Fair Lawn Police Department held it's 4th Junior Citizen Police Academy Class. The class was funded through a grant from the Fair Lawn Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention. The Fair Lawn Board of Education was kind enough to allow us to use Westmoreland School and provide transportation for our field trips.

The class members learned about the Fair Lawn Police Department, observed demonstrations of our hi-tech equipment, toured Headquarters, visited the Bergen County Bureau of Criminal Identification, the Bergen County Courthouse and had the chance to speak with a Family Court Judge. In addition, we also visited the Bergen County Institute for Lawn and Public Safety in Mahwah. Students received a tour of the fire training area and got to see what firefighters do first hand. We then spoke with a police instructor who explained what the "real" police academy is like. This was followed by a police dog demonstration and a visit from a New Jersey State Police helicopter. On day four, the Fair Lawn Rescue Squad paid us a visit and demonstrated a simulated extrication on a junk car using heavy equipment. For the final day, we received a visit from two inmates from the Bergen County Jail who spoke about their experiences in jail as well as the mistakes they made that caused them to be sentenced to jail. The inmates were non violent offenders who were in a substance abuse treatment program at the jail.  We were also visited daily by Lt. Robert Kneer, our honor guard commander, who drilled the students in marching. Friday afternoon there was a pizza party followed by a graduation that was attended by many parents, Mayor Marty Etler, Council members, and Chief Rose.
