Hiring Information for the F.L.P.D.

     Fair Lawn Police Chief Erik Rose announces that applications for the New Jersey Department of Personnel "Law Enforcement Examination" are available at Fair Lawn Police Headquarters, while supplies last. The pool of eligible candidates that result from this list will may be used to fill vacant law enforcement jobs in the Borough. The list will be valid for two years. Applications are sent directly to the New Jersey Department of Personnel and must be postmarked by March 31, 2008.

     Applicants for the position of Police Officer in the Borough of Fair Lawn must reside in the Borough of Fair Lawn to apply for the test.  Additionally, applicants must be a graduate of a high school or a vocational school, or possess an approved High School Equivalency Certificate (GED).  You are eligible to apply for this exam if you expect to graduate from high school by June 30, 2008

     Applicants must not be less than 18 years of age or more than 35 years of age (unless they meet certain restrictions) as of March 31, 2008

     The LEE exam is tentatively scheduled for the Spring 2008.

Q. How can I apply to be a police officer with the Fair Lawn Police Department?  

A. There are two ways perspective officers can apply for a position with the Fair Lawn Police Department.

     The Fair Lawn Police Department hires under the rules and regulations of the New Jersey Department of Personnel (formally New Jersey Civil Service). Currently, those rules (in part) require a potential candidate to be a citizen of the United States, a resident of Fair Lawn at the time of the application closing date, at least 18 years of age and less than 35 years of age (with a few exceptions) by the filing closing date,  (click for the Maximum Age Hiring Information sheet) have a high school diploma or High School Equivalent Certificate (GED), speak and understand the English language, and take and pass a written examination which is given at the request of the appointing authority (the Borough Manager).      The New Jersey Department of Personnel announced the next entry-level law enforcement examination on December 1, 2007, with an application filing deadline of March 31, 2008. Additional information about the Law Enforcement Exam can be found on the N.J.D.O.P. web site at:

     Printed copies of the announcement, which will include the application and instructions, will also be available during that time from Department of Personnel and New Jersey State Employment offices, merit system police departments, and public libraries throughout the State.

     One application form will enable you to be considered for the following entry-level law enforcement title areas:

Municipal Police Officer
Sheriff's Officer
County Corrections

State Corrections
State Juvenile Title

State Park Police Officer Trainee

     The resulting list, generated from those that pass the examination, will be valid for a period of 2 years.  In addition to NJDOP requirements, current local ordinance requires that anyone taking the examination for Fair Lawn Police Officer be a resident of Fair Lawn at the time of application.  At the time of your appointment to the police department, you must also be a resident of Fair Lawn.

     For currently working, New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC) certified, sworn police officers,  the Fair Lawn Police Department participates in the New Jersey Intergovernmental Transfer Program.  Minimum requirements of at least one year of satisfactory service in a New Jersey municipality or county apply.
