Q. I just purchased a car seat for my child.  How can I tell if I have it installed properly.
A.
The Fair Lawn Police Department has certified Child Passenger Restraint Technicians who will gladly assist you with this.  The process usually takes anywhere from 20 - 45 minutes.  To schedule an appointment for this important service, please call Traffic Safety Officer Tim Franco at (201) 794-5413 or e-mail him at tfranco@fairlawnpd.com.

Q. I parked my car in the CVS lot (or Post Office lot, Eckerd's lot, Pathmark lot, etc.) and now it's missing.  What can I do?
A.
The owners of those properties (and others) have increased the enforcement of  "parking for customers only".  It's possible that they had your vehicle towed out of their lot.  The first thing you need to do is to contact the Fair Lawn Police (201) 796-1400.  The towing company that the owners use faxes the F.L.P.D. a list of vehicles that they removed from the lots.  When you call, we'll check the list to make sure your vehicle was removed by the property owner and wasn't stolen.  If the vehicle was stolen, we'll dispatch an officer for a stolen car report.  If the vehicle was removed by the property owner, we'll give you the phone number of the tow company so you can make arrangements to claim your car.  Be aware that the Fair Lawn Police Department does not impound cars parked without owners permission on private property. That is the responsibility of the property owner.

Q. Can I come to Fair Lawn Police Headquarters and have the police desk check my license to see how many points I have or whether I have an arrest record??
A
.  No, New Jersey police agencies are prohibited by law from disseminating any criminal justice information, including Division of Motor Vehicle information, not specifically requested for official law enforcement purposes. Criminal history information is available to the general public through the New Jersey State Police, following an appropriate application process. Driver history records may be obtained directly from the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles. Contact a NJMVC regional service center in your area for further information.

Q. I receive calls from solicitors requesting donations to various police related donations.  Are they legitimate??  Should I donate to them???
A.  The Fair Lawn Police Department does not solicit over the telephone. Fair Lawn police officers are members of the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association, Local #67.  As a fraternal group, Fair Lawn P.B.A. #67 only conducts a solicitation through the mail, usually once every two years.  Telephone calls from other groups representing themselves as "law enforcement" organizations are frequently made by telemarketing firms. These solicitations DO NOT benefit the Fair Lawn Police Department or P.B.A. Local #67 in any way. These telemarketers are not police officers, and often use high-pressure tactics to get you to participate. Some will even say that they are affiliated with other Bergen County police agencies.

We urge you to use extreme caution should you decide to contribute to these companies. If you wish to contribute to a telemarketing solicitation, always ask for the name, address and telephone number so that you may call back after careful consideration.  Most of them will not give out this information. You may also ask for financial statements and/or budget information prior to making your decision.

Q. My car was impounded by the Fair Lawn Police. How do I get it back?
A.
To claim the car, the owner of the vehicle must respond to Fair Lawn Police Headquarters and obtain a release for the vehicle. Recently enacted New Jersey law requires that proof of insurance is needed prior to a release of a vehicle, whether it is being towed or driven out.  If the vehicle is being driven out of the impound yard, the owner must present documents at Fair Lawn Police Headquarters, showing that he or she owns the vehicle, that it is properly registered and insured, and that their driver’s license is valid, before the release will be issued.  If the vehicle’s paperwork is up to date, and the owner's license is suspended, then he or she must bring two licensed drivers with them to Fair Lawn Police Headquarters when he or she comes for the release. If the vehicle is being towed from the impound yard, the owner must bring the tow truck driver into Fair Lawn Police Headquarters, along with proof of ownership and insurance. This procedure is for routine police impounds and does not apply to motor vehicle accident vehicles (unless the vehicle was impounded for a violation). Additionally, this procedure does not apply if the vehicle is being held by the Fair Lawn Police Department for evidentiary reasons. When you come for the release, the Fair Lawn Police Department will direct you to the impound yard. Towing and storage fees will apply and are payable to the tow service at the time of pick up.  The Fair Lawn Police Department uses several different tow services on a rotating basis.  Towing and storage fees are covered by Borough Ordinance.  For questions regarding the towing or storage fees of your vehicle, please contact Traffic Safety Officer Tim Franco at 201-795-5413.  Generally, towing and storage fees are payable in cash (no checks or credit cards) at the time of the vehicles release.

Q. Do I have to register my burglar alarm?
A.
Local ordinance requires that all alarms (burglar, fire, panic, holdup, etc.) must be registered with the Fair Lawn Police Department. This registration is the responsibility of the homeowner, not the security company. There is no registration fee. Registration forms can be obtained from the Records Bureau and can be dropped off, mailed in, faxed in, or e-mailed in. Failure to register your alarm may result in a summons for having an unregistered alarm in addition to any summonses issued for the accidental alarm. If you want to submit your alarm registration via e-mail, click here. If you want to print the registration form to drop off, fax, or mail in, click here.

Q.   How can I obtain a handicapped parking permit?
A.
Temporary handicapped parking permits are available from the Chief's Secretary at Fair Lawn Police Headquarters. The permits are valid for a 6 month period and may be renewed for an additional 6 month period with the submission of the appropriate documentation. Temporary handicapped parking permits are intended for non-permanent, temporary injuries and disabilities. They are not for temporary periods of time. For example, a temporary handicapped parking permit will not be issued to be used until the permanent one arrives.

Applications for a temporary permit are available from the Chief's Secretary, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday (excluding holidays). The applications need to be completely filled out, including a section by the person’s medical doctor. The completed application and two checks, one for $4.00 made out to the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles and one for $3.00 made out to the Borough of Fair Lawn, are then returned to the Chief's Secretary for processing. (There is no cost for an extension. The permit will be issued shortly, usually within a few days.

Permanent handicapped parking placards and plates are issued by the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles. Applications are available from any DMV office.
